History of Oil Pulling:
Charaka samhita Ch V -78 to 80 talks on Oil pulling as “It is beneficial for strength of jaws, depth of voice, flabbiness of face, improving gustatory sensation and good taste for food. One used to this practice never gets dryness of throat, nor do his lips ever get cracked; his teeth will never be carious and will be deep rooted; he will not have any toothache nor will his teeth set on edge by sour intake; his teeth can chew even the hardest eatables”
Dr. F. Karsch, M.D., presented a paper to the All-Ukrainian Association outlining rather incredible possibilities oil pulling is capable of. Going by Dr. Karsch, oil pulling benefits can help with almost any illness or chronic condition.
Dr. F. Karsch, M.D., presented a paper to the All-Ukrainian Association outlining rather incredible possibilities oil pulling is capable of. Going by Dr. Karsch, oil pulling benefits can help with almost any illness or chronic condition.
The Procedure:
Step1:
First thing in the morning on an empty stomach and before drinking any liquids (including water), pour exactly one tablespoon of sesame oil (or whatever oil you have chosen) into your mouth. It is advisable not to do this process at any other time. Children can also do this with less quantity of oil provided they have control and practice not to swallow the oil.
Step 2:
Swish the oil around in your mouth without swallowing it. Move it around in your mouth and through your teeth, as if it was mouthwash (don't tilt your head back to gargle though). You'll find that the oil will start to get watery as your saliva mixes with it. Keep swishing. If your jaw muscles get sore while swishing, you're putting too much into it. Relax your jaw muscles and use your tongue to help move the liquid around the inside of your mouth. When you do this correctly, you'll feel very comfortable. Pretty soon. In my experience, you will get comfortable with the process in about a week’s time.
There is no right way or wrong way to swish and pull oil. Don't focus on doing it right. Do it with very natural movement. Do this gently, not vigorously, in a relaxed way for about 15-20 minutes. In the beginning you may start with the lesser time and gradually keep increasing to about 20 minutes.
If you have the unbearable urge to swallow and if it becomes too unpleasant, spit out and try again. It can be a bit unpleasant at first when you’re not used to it, but soon won’t be bothersome at all, just like brushing your teeth.
When the oil has become saturated with the toxins it has pulled out, it may become whitish and a thinner, milky consistency, depending on the type of oil used. Each time you oil pull, it can take a different amount of time to get to that point, so 20 minutes is a general rule of thumb, but you can experiment with this.
If you spit out before 20 minutes. start again, the process is to make the oil swish enough time in your mouth so that it becomes a white thick substance which is a indication of process completion.
Step3:
As the end of the oil pulling session approaches, Spit the oil out, then rinse the mouth with warm salt water. ( Just use normal table salt). Salt water rinsing isn’t absolutely necessary, but is very helpful as an antimicrobial and to soothe any inflammation and proven to be effective in rinsing out any toxins which may be left out in the mouth. When I began this process, I never used to rinse with warm salt water. That started giving me the problem of sore throat. Since then I make it a point to rinse and then gargle with warm salt water, and relieved from the problem of sore throat.
The most effective oil pulling is done with a tablespoon of organic sesame oil. Other oils such as coconut, sunflower and olive oil have been used, although sesame oil is considered one of the best oils for this practice. I recommend alternating oils every couple of days to get the full benefit. Putting high quality organic oils into the mouth has a multi-effect outcome. I feel more comfortable with organic coconut oil. However remember not to do OIL PULLING with coconut hair oil, as it may have some inedible chemicals.
Firstly, the oils mix with the saliva, turning it into a thin, white liquid. Lipids in the oils begin to pull out toxins from the saliva of the mouth. As you swish the oil around the mouth, teeth, gums and tongue, the oil continues to absorb toxins, and usually ends up turning thick and viscous and white. Once the oil has reached this consistency, it is spit out before the toxins are reabsorbed into the body.
Multiple scientific studies show the efficacy of oil pulling therapy. One study shows that oil pulling with sesame oil can boost overall oral health. Specifically, using sesame oil as an oral health agent helps to reduce the amount of germ count in both teeth plaque and mouth saliva. Scientists believe that the lipids in the oil both pull out bacteria, as well as stop bacterial from sticking to the walls of the oral cavity.
Oil pulling may also increase saponification in the mouth, creating a soapy environment that cleanses the mouth as vegetable fat is an emulsifier by nature. Most interesting is perhaps the ability of oil to cleanse out harmful bacteria, as well as reduce fungal overgrowth. These oils also possibly help in cellular restructuring, and are related to the proper functioning of the lymph nodes and other internal organs.
Other possible benefits of oil pulling for oral health include:
- Overall strengthening of the teeth and gums and jaws.
- Prevention of diseases of the gums and mouth, such as cavities and gingivitis Prevention of overall tooth decay.
- Prevention for bad breath.
- Potential holistic remedy for bleeding gums.
- Prevention of dryness of the lips, mouth and throat.
- Possible holistic treatment for general soreness in the jaw area.
Benefits Beyond the Mouth?
Believe it or not, ancient Ayurvedic health practitioners believed that oil pulling could reduce more than just diseases of the mouth and throat. Today, many holistic practitioners recommend its use for a variety of health concerns. It is believed that these oils help the lymphatic system of the body as harmful bacteria are removed and beneficial micro flora are given with a healthy environment to flourish. Because of this holistic perspective, oil pulling has been used as a preventative health measure for many other conditions.
Other possible benefits of oil pulling for overall health include:
- Migraine headache relief
- Correcting hormone imbalances
- Reducing inflammation of arthritis
- May help with gastro-enteritis
- Aids in the reduction of eczema
- May reduce symptoms of bronchitis
- Helps support normal kidney function
- May help reduce sinus congestion
- Some people report improved vision
- Helps reduce insomnia
- Reduced hangover after alcohol consumption
- Aids in reducing pain Reduces the symptoms of allergies
- Helps detoxify the body of harmful metals and organisms
Scientific Studies on Sesame Oil & Oil Pulling
Sesame oil is particularly high in the antioxidants sesamol, sesamin, and sesamolin. It also holds a high concentration of Vitamin E and polyunsaturated fatty acids. These antioxidants have been found to stop the absorption of negative forms of cholesterol in the liver. Multiple studies have shown the antibacterial capacities of sesame oil. These studies support the use of oil pulling in the prevention of dental cavities and gingivitis.
A 2007 study looking into the effect of oil pulling (with sunflower oil) on plaque and gingivitis on oral soft and hard tissues. Results found that after 45 days of oil pulling, subjects showed a statistically significant reduction in gingivitis.
Another study, conducted in 2008 found a“remarkable reduction in the total count of bacteria” in the mouth, and an overall marked reduction in susceptibility dental cavities. The antibacterial activity of sesame oil was also studied and found to have an effect on the Streptococcus mutants in the mouth. In fact, these studies showed an overall reduction of bacteria from 10 to 33.4% in participants, and after 40 days of oil-pulling, participants were found to show 20% in average reduction in oral bacteria. Moreover, half of all participants in this case study showed a drastic reduction in susceptibility to dental caries.
FAQs on Oil Pulling:
What is the best time to practice oil pulling?
Ayurveda advised oil pulling in the morning on empty stomach. Dr Karach advised oil pulling before breakfast on empty stomach. One hour after drinking water or tea or coffee or liquids in the morning but before breakfast. The best time is when you do not feel well for any health problem do oil pulling on empty stomach. I have consulted many expert on this. Some prefers to do oil pulling before drinking the 1.25 L of water, some prefer to drink water wait for 45 minutes and then do oil pulling. My advice is to drink 1.25L of water, the first thing in morning and after 45 minutes do oil pulling.
Who can practice oil pulling?
Everybody above the age of five years can practice. For children of five years and above use only a teaspoon (five ml) of oil for oil pulling. People with dentures should remove them and practice. Woman can practice oil pulling during periods and also pregnancy.
How much time gap is required to eat or drink after oil pulling?
After doing oil pulling, wash your mouth and then you can eat or drink and no time gap is required.
What other oils can be used for oil pulling?
Dr Karach had suggested Sunflower Oil. Sesame Oil was prescribed in Ayurveda texts for oil pulling. Both oils worked well in curing health problems. Some found sesame oil better. However my personal favorite is organic coconut oil.
The quantity of 10 ml of oil is too little for oil pulling. Can we do with 20 ml of oil?
When we do oil pulling the entire oil should become thin, like water and no oily feeling should be left. When that happens we would have utilized the entire oil for the purpose of oil pulling. This happens within 15 to 20 minutes for most of the people. If the quantity is increased it takes more time to become watery and white and many would not like to spend more time on pulling. Spitting when it is still oily is waste of oil and a feeling of freshness does not come which is not desirable. If you feel a few ml of more oil is required try, there is no harm. This is also the reason for suggesting only five ml of oil for children.
Can we do any other work while doing oil pulling?
No. It is advised to do oil pulling slowly, chin up preferably in sitting position, to see that oil pulled through teeth and touches all portions of mucous membrane in the oral cavity.
Is there any difference in the practice of oil pulling for Acute and Chronic diseases?
Acute diseases can be healed in two to four days by practicing oil pulling three times a day on empty stomach, before breakfast, lunch and dinner. Chronic diseases need more time may be up to one year or more depending on the condition of disease, age, habits, state of general health of the person, etc.
What problems can arise during oil pulling?
(a) Oil does not become watery or thin even after 30 minutes and it appears the oil is being absorbed and it reduces in quantity
(b) Nose block due to accumulation of mucus
(c) Sneezing and coughing
(d) Phlegm in the throat gets loose and comes into the mouth
(e) Urge to pass urine or stools.
Let’s understand in detail.
(a) Oil does not become watery because there is inadequate salivation and mouth is dry. In most cases, it happens in the morning and in some cases evening also. Under normal circumstances oil will not get absorbed in the mouth. Main reason is lack of adequate salivation due to lack fluids in body. In all such cases you must drink two or three glasses of water, go for a walk of 30 to 45 minutes and do oil pulling after returning.
(b) To avoid nose block during oil pulling wash, clean and blow your nose before starting oil pulling. Slowly blow out nose to clear while holding the oil in the mouth. Repeat if necessary as you continue oil pulling.
(c) Sensation/irritation may cause sneezing or coughing while doing oil pulling. Do oil pulling slowly in a relaxed state to avoid such irritation. Stop pulling and relax as irritation or sensation to sneeze is felt. It will subside. You can sneeze or cough while holding oil in mouth. If you have to sneeze or cough through mouth do it in the sink or some such place to avoid oil driblets spray all over or cover mouth with tissue paper.
(d) If phlegm comes into the mouth, making pulling inconvenient, spit and do pulling with fresh oil again.
(e) Urge to urinate or pass stools will arise only if you have not gone through nature’s calls before oil pulling. In all cases of urge to pass stools or urinate during oil pulling, the best is to relax on the commode and do oil pulling.
How long will it take to cure a particular disease?
How long it takes to cure a particular disease is difficult to specify because it depends on the age, state of health and disease, food and other habits etc of each person. Dr Karach however said“that chronic diseases may take a year whereas acute diseases can be cured in 2 to 4 days. Practice until the original strength, freshness, calm sleep, good appetite and good remembrance is back again”. Please use oil pulling as complementary method of healing. It is not a substitute for medical treatment prescribed by competent medical professional.
Are there any side effects of Oil Pulling?
Diseases get aggravated due to climate, food, water, air or mental state. Be aware and conscious of such causes so that you do not mistake them to be side effects. In some chronic cases there may be a reaction- an apparent aggravation before cure and it is not a side effect. It is the stage when the body is regaining the normal healthy state from a diseased condition-somewhat similar to healing crisis in naturopathy or homeopathic aggravation.
Are there restrictions on the use of medicine or treatment during Oil Pulling?
There is no restriction on the use of medicine or treatment. During chronic diseases and medication, Oil Pulling reduces the side effects of drugs. As you improve, based on your own symptoms reduce medicines over a period and stop completely. This will ensure that the disease is eliminated from the body and the body repairs itself to a perfectly healthy and normal state.
Will it help chronic bad breath, what suggestions do you have?
Oil Pulling will definitely help with bad breath. You can start by doing OP twice a day in the morning and evening for a week and then adjust the frequency afterwards.
How to wash mouth after oil pulling? Shall I use Ayurvedic tooth powder after oil pulling? Oil pulling before brushing or after brushing?
You can use any toothpaste / powder that you normally use for washing your mouth after OP. Brushing your teeth before oil pulling is up to you but definitely brush your teeth after oil pulling.
If a person is suffering from knee pain and shoulder joint pain for the past three months, whether oil pulling would heal above ailments. Which oil would be useful for OIL PULLING –sesame oil-coconut oil or sun flower oil?
Oil Pulling can bring relief to all types of pains including arthritis. I have no hesitation in recommending it to you both to try Oil Pulling to start of at least once a day in the morning. I am sure you will feel the effect within one to two weeks. In addition I have seen magneto therapy for knee pain working well. If you have a good homeopath, the small pills will also work well to reduce the pain.
When I pull, I get the need to swallow periodically, I try to fight it but I have to, is that normal?
When oil is in the mouth for oil pulling, the phlegm sticking around the throat gets loose and falls into the throat and you swallow. This must be happening to you and you must be under the impression that it is the oil that you are swallowing. I am sure it is not the oil. Please observe carefully. The phlegm in the throat will be in very small quantities and you just automatically swallow without any effort. Try to observe and see that you are not swallowing oil which is in the mouth.
Does it help with whitening teeth, receding gums and gum sensitivity due to crowns?
Oil Pulling will solve all the three problems of teeth, receding gums and gum sensivity.
Can Oil Pulling actually help stop my sinus infections???? I’m “pulling” twice a day (morning and before bed) and for 20 minutes each time using Sesame Oil.
Oil Pulling will help in healing any type of infection including sinus infections. You should do Oil Pulling on empty stomach ie 4 hours after eating. So your practice in the night before going to bed may not have a gap of 4hours after dinner. Also Oil Pulling increases metabolic rate in the body so you may be alert and awake after Oil Pulling. So I suggest you do Oil Pulling in the evening before dinner. You can continue to do in the morning on waking up before breakfast.
I have metal fillings in my teeth. Is it safe to do oil pulling?
If the metal filling is not properly done it will come off.
Testimonials:
Cancer cases
"Most importantly, I want to write about three cases of cancer. In two cases, biopsy report confirms “schirrus type of carcinoma of uterus”. In the third case, it is malignant growthof a tumor of a size bigger than tennis ball on the jawbone. This case is also of a woman on homeopathy medicines. Within two months of oil pulling, in bothcases of carcinoma of uterus bleeding reduced, general condition improved and they are confident that their disease will go. You know confidence/faith contributes to cure more than medicine.
In the case of malignant tumor after a month of oil pulling, pus came out of a hole in the tumor on the jawbone. The pus stopped after three weeks, the hole closed and the size of tumor came down to almost normal. In these cases, my medicines must have given temporary relief. I am hoping they will totally heal.
In case of joint pains the improvement that would have resulted in eight months with my medicines, have come within two moths of oil pulling.
For allergy, asthma and tooth diseases, the results are wonderful. My medicines must have given only temporary relief. I am hoping oil pulling will heal them totally."
